Swiss Embassy, Berlin, Germany
A winning combination

Launched in 2005, the IOC Athlete Career Programme helps Olympic and Paralympic athletes successfully manage the difficult transition from elite sport to a new career.

The Swiss Embassy in Berlin was looking for a part-time facility manager. Steffen Frisch at Adecco’s Berlin branch had just the person they needed. Martin Rickmann is an attacker in the German national sitting volleyball team, a World silver medallist in 2002, fourth place at the 2004 Paralympics and national champion in 2006. A sports injury ended his career as an electrician. He retrained as a salesman and then screen designer, but found it hard to balance work and sport. The Olympic Training Centre in Berlin put him in touch with Adecco. Initially employed on a one-year contract, his qualities shone through and the Swiss Embassy quickly hired him on a permanent basis. Now, working 28 hours a week on flexitime, he can give his best in a responsible position and focus on sport as well.
